It’s important to know exactly how to store different foods so they taste delicious by the time you eat them. A tip has been shared on how to ensure asparagus remains fresh and crisp for longer.
The hack was revealed by Oliver & Barr who recommend people to “treat your asparagus like flowers”. The method helps to maximise the shelf life and freshness of the vegetable. It ensures asparagus stays hydrated and doesn’t wilt.
Oliver & Barr says: “Next time you grab a pack of fresh asparagus from your local’s farmer’s market, make sure you trim the ends when you get home, just like you would a bouquet of flowers, and then store them in a vase or glass of water. Once you’ve done that, loosely wrap a plastic bag over the tips and then pop them in your fridge.”
People are advised to remove around one inch from the bottom of the asparagus before standing them upright in water. You should always make sure the cut ends are submerged.
Then people should simply store them in the fridge before bringing them out again for cooking. They should maintain their bright colour and good crunch.
Alternatively, if you plan on cooking the asparagus within a day of buying them, you can just wrap them in a damp paper towel and place them in a reasealable bag. Put the bag in a fridge before bringing out for cooking.
The methods work as water is essential for the asparagus to survive. It allows them to maintain their bite and vibrancy without going off.
You can also freeze bunches of asparagus. Experts advise blanching the vegetables first before putting them in a bag and transferring them to the freezer.
Asparagus is a great vegetable to throw into salads or roast as a side dish. It can also be used as a pizza topping or pasta fillings.
